What I will miss most about Princeton

Every workplace has parts that are lovely and parts that are less so. One of the loveliest parts of Princeton is its wonderfully sprawling library system and more importantly, the hyper-smart librarians that keep it running. During my time there, my students had the good fortune of working with Emma Sarconi, who brought out John Audobon’s absolute ginormous Birds of America (1827-1838) to show us during our sessions together, alongside the very gun that he used to shoot all these birds. A really provocative way of thinking about how environmental conservation and the love of nature can be rooted in bloodshed! It’s especially fascinating to think about how Audobon not only shot all those birds he painted, but posed them in strange positions too.
